Portfolio death match.

I’m going completely insane trying to decide what to include in my portfolio for my application to The University of Art and Design Helsinki. I’m applying to their masters of arts photography program. I am trying to decide what I should focus on in my portfolio. There’s a snow storm here. I opened up the curtains so I could look out my window to the intersection and watch all the emergency vehicles run around and try to fight mother nature. It’s a relatively safe war zone.

anyhow! here’s a rough portfolio if anyone is interested in offering their input, specifically what to get rid of, would be helpful. Please disregard the order of the photos, it will be changed.

On another note I made a new blog thing it’s still in development if anyone wants to take a look. I think it’s a cool format. I may replace this with it I may allow them to coexist. And on another note I have no new images because, well I’m poor and have been avoiding outside, for budgetary and weather reasons. Inside isn’t that bad anyhow.

update: ok I updated again (after nicks comments) the new update is in a somewhat order. I’m unsure about the street shots? what is the consensus? stay or go? also I added a bit more of the dharmsala abstract stuff.

Better. I still want to see some of those Dharamsala abstract shots in there, but you know that. Shot of Randelle isn’t blowing me away but you want it in for the concept right?

  2. you are SO good at what you do.

i love the ones from above; tables chairs auditorium..mm.mm.m…

    Hey Ryan,

I hope you don’t mind me sounding off here. I definatly think shots 04,08,14,15,16, you should keep. They all have that european “Dazed and Confused” kind of style. I don’t know what the school would be looking for, but those shots are really tight. The overhead shots remind me of Andreas Gurnsky, or Wolfgang Tillmans kind of stuff. Anyways, those ones in particular strike me as the most artful and professional of the bunch.

    Whatup?
    05. 07. 13.
    they’re my top three.
something glamorous, something abstract, something corporate.
which are the Dharamsala abstract ones? We should swap photos at some point on that note, tho I think you already backed up some of mine from memory.

Wow, the portfolio is coming along quite nicely now. It looks pretty coherent to me, although the last photo of the peacock was a bit out of line for me.
Anyway, good luck with it! (Still going through with it, aren’t you?)

good luck with the application. it’s a great uni from what i’ve heard, and helsinki’s defitely a terrific city. small-ish, yes, but it being the capital there’s loads of things going on all the time. i used to live in espoo (the second biggest city of finland, which is attached to helsinki. it doesn’t even have proper center, as everyone commutes to helsinki) for two years. i love helsinki. if you go there, make sure to check out the orion cinema, which shows old classics.
