We canoed out into some lakes north of Haliburton. It was cold, very cold. They were calling for snow on the sunday that we were there. When I got there I took my camera out of my dry bag and the battery that I had just put into it was dead. So here are a lot of shots with guessed exposures.

There is a bit of a learning curve. Composing images upside down is something to get used to.

I was in detroit checking out this project I might do some lighting design for these guys so I thought I would go down and see what they’re project is all about and take some pictures. On my way there I saw a nice factory and then when I got there 20/20 was there following mitch and gina around. So I have some shots of the 20/20 film crew. Anyhow those guys were awesome and Corine (Mitch and Ginas friend and new neighbour) showed me some of the foreclosed houses in the neighbourhood. You can just walk into them, most have fire damage and have been stripped of any valuables. Copper pipes, wires, porcelain toilets, flooring, light fixtures. Anyhow it was an interesting weekend.

These shots are from 4×5. I didn’t want to rent the imacon scanner at imageworks so Patrick and I rigged up a set up with his medium format digital phase one back, a strobe with a softbox as a backlight and a macro lens. The results are actually pretty incredible. It took some tweaking of the raw images but we managed to get some pretty good colour/exposure latitude and the resolution/sharpness is better than you can get from any flatbed. I just left these in the sleeves because tonight was more of an experiment than anything else so there is some dust on the negs. But I’m going to build a negative carrier for our set up, one for 6×4.5 and 6×9 as well!

The half frame is an interesting beast. The lack of focusing system is interesting. Most of the first half of the roll is out of focus. But I figured out about half way through that I was looking at the wrong distance marker. I think I’ll get better at guessing distances. There are a few shots that are pretty sharp. All and all I am very happy with the performance.

I should also mention that the integration between photoshop cs4 and lightroom is fantastic. It’s stitching ability is mind blowing. Very impressive. I bought Annie Leibovitz’s new book “at work” and was shocked to hear that most of her portraiture is stitched. She was saying that after she’s done a shoot her assistants will shoot all around the portrait area to make sure they have good overlap.

The first couple shots here are shitty flatbed scans of some 645 from september. as usual click on the image for the gallery.

If there are any problems on here with the rss feed and what not that might take the weekend to troubleshoot, but so far there haven’t been any problems. So I’ve started shooting with my medium format camera a lot more. I really like the 645 format. Too bad all I have is a shitty flatbed scanner for scanning 120 or 220. gallery is behind image as usual.

Lets call this the post of film lost. Long story short, I found a bunch of old film and processed it and a lot of it is old and looks bad and some is rather new. How old you ask, well shots from Macau last summer at this time, 120 medium format stuff from montreal this winter with my TLR. The new stuff is from my trip recently to Boston and Maine. There are also some shots that Katherine took of me kiteboarding. A real mixed bag of images here, most are crap.

In other news, I’ve upgraded my blog here so it’s easier to navigate (It has tags now!) I’ve also become completely obsessed with cycling and I wear the spandex and the cleats and everything, so I don’t take transit street photos anymore because well, I don’t take transit. Those of you thinking I am the next Lance Armstrong are absolutely right.

So I got thinking about this and it really got me kind of intrigued. So I thought, if I put a lens up to this thing, the same distance away as the lens sits from the film plane and there’s enough light, then the lens will project an image onto the scanner. Well if then I hit scan it would capture that image. So I set out to test my theories, and guess what. It worked. so here’s a little self portrait, from my scanner. I’m thinking that tomorrow morning i might try it out the window where there is much more light. I’m also curious how it will handle motion considering how the exposure is dynamic. hmmmm.
The other thing I did with my scanner tonight was scan a medium format shot that had been sitting in my car for months. I lent my camera to a girl I worked with awhile ago and the whole role was blank except for one shot that I had taken in my car. I’ve been shooting so much 35mm lately I forgot how good 120 is. I wish I had a nice 120 scanner or an enlarger I’d shoot it a lot more. Either way. here are the shots.

John and Randelle were wonderful models. Ray was a great help setting up lights and moving props around, all we need to do now is teach him how to load a medium format back. Bringing the film to the lab tomorrow (and picking some up and processing some stuff). But I have a few test shots here from the 30d that I can post for now. The ones of me ray took just testing out the lighting and what not for the scene, we had a lot of fun. thanks again to everyone who helped out, and I’ll get a scan of the prints off the medium format stuff once it’s done.

I wish I could show larger versions because the details are nice. and these are all off the 30d. I have similar looking medium format stuff but I have no way of printing them because they’re slides.
