Photos!

I’ve been using some expired 220 portra nc which can’t go on any longer. Time to buy film. I am thinking I might start shooting 220 vc.

In this post…. Clay, Emily, Katherine, Alberta, London, Outside. It was 25 degrees out for some of these shots last saturday and there was some serious wind. Tonight (7 days later) it’s -4.

Last weekend I was at my parents place for an Easter lunch with my parents and their parents. My grand parents from both sides of my family were there, so after lunch I asked everyone if I could take their portrait. My Mom is usually extremely reluctant to have her photo taken so I could not help getting a shot of her with her mouth open. I think it’s a great shot personally, kind of sums up her personality if you ask me. I had only one shot for each because I was shooting 4×5. My grand parents are all great people and took me cornering them after a meal pretty well. They’re all in really good health too. Makes me feel pretty good to have good genes.

Today I finally figured out how to scan 4×5 at home. I have a (very dusty and old) flatbed scanner that is capable of scanning medium format so I figured out how to lock the scanner tone and exposure and scanned one half of the negative then scanned the other half. Once I had my halves I reassembled them in photoshop with the always handy automated photomerge. The results are pretty great. There are no seams that I can find. The only issues are that the scanner is pretty shitty and it’s really dusty so the scans are not good enough for printing but most shots come out ok for the web. Colour really suffers but black and white is fine.

These shots were captured in colour then converted to black and white using photoshop.

So I still haven’t processed that black and white film. Maybe I’ll do it tonight…

I was taking some shots for a gym today and had a portrait here I thought I would post. I’m interested in what you, the 2 readers of my blog (and my mom) think of the colour here. I have some exceptionally bad monitors here at work that aren’t well calibrated. This work is all for the web but I’m just curious.

Disconcerting, it looks darker on this monitor than the one to my left. Welcome to the world of digital photography, where consistency is a thing of the past.

So I was in London last week and Ken and I were going to take the boat out but the weather was pretty sporadic that day, so Beasley stopped in and we hung out enjoying the odd cloud formations. The next day we planned to boat again, but the weather was off and on again so Ken honored me by inviting me to join him in using his new gun for the first time. So we went over to his place gut the tags off and recreated Nintendo’s original game “Clay shooter” which many of you will know as the game that came with duck hunt. We got all the tools necessary to perform the ceremony and Ken made the inaugural shot. The rest of the afternoon was a delight as we fired off shells destroying one clay after the next (and we weren’t even cheating by holding the gun right up to the tv). I was new to the whole process so ken had to explain the workings of the gun to me, but I learned quickly and soon was shooting like a pro. Before we retired ken took the opportunity of the last shot on my roll to show how it’s really done. This was all portra 800, kodaks attempt at reproducing green. All shot on the eos 1n with either the 85 f1.8 or the 17-40 f4 or the 50 zeiss 1.7.

So I had to get my document scanner out tonight to scan some tax forms and while I was cleaning off the glass I was thinking about how a scanner is kind of like a ccd, it is a plane that captures light. So I got thinking about this and it really got me kind of intrigued. So I thought, if I put a lens up to this thing, the same distance away as the lens sits from the film plane and there’s enough light, then the lens will project an image onto the scanner. Well if then I hit scan it would capture that image. So I set out to test my theories, and guess what. It worked. so here’s a little self portrait, from my scanner. I’m thinking that tomorrow morning i might try it out the window where there is much more light. I’m also curious how it will handle motion considering how the exposure is dynamic. hmmmm.
The other thing I did with my scanner tonight was scan a medium format shot that had been sitting in my car for months. I lent my camera to a girl I worked with awhile ago and the whole role was blank except for one shot that I had taken in my car. I’ve been shooting so much 35mm lately I forgot how good 120 is. I wish I had a nice 120 scanner or an enlarger I’d shoot it a lot more. Either way. here are the shots.

OK so it’s finally been a bit warmer recently. So here are a couple rolls from the last week. This weekend was the UWO Film Festival. SO I traveled to London to attend that. The film I shot for Nick, Skinema took best overall short and viewers choice. The film that Graham and I shot “The Observer” also screened. Since it’s not 3am I’ve decided to go through and narrate the shots. This weekend was also St Patrick’s day so there might be some festive shots too. Everything is off the zeiss ikon and trix+3.

I’ll start off with a self portrait how original.

There are a lot of “punk” characters who hang out on queen (they may live there?) they are not the cleanest folk, neither are Toronto’s garbage receptacles

So I went to London for the film fest and spent the afternoon on Friday with my mom, we had some lunch in Ilderton, where my parents live and I grew up. my mom hates getting her picture taken and will ask me to take this down.

I wish I had been on the street when I took this, this guy was too perfect. I shot this from my car, my light metre was in my bag so I just guessed the exposure. Came out much better than I had anticipated, all considered.

The winners were announced, and Nicks film took the top prizes, I guess as cinematographer that’s a win for me too.

Vanessa wanted to take a picture of me with my camera, so after a quick lesson on range finders she was ready to go. The focus is a little short but not a bad first try. You can see my new hair cut here.

I was trying to get some bounced light here to fill Jens face but the table wasn’t working too well. I wanted a piece of paper or foam core, but we couldn’t find any in the kitchen. I like the shot though. as anticipated a little underexposed but i like it. A pause away from the rest of the party.

this is where I ran out of film and reached into my coat pocket for another roll and realized I wasn’t wearing a coat, which ended my shooting for the evening.

Insomniac Olympics

Zeiss Ikon IIIa 1st roll results, here they are. this is trix plus 2 developed in xtol. I’m really excited about the results off the new rangefinder the lens seems to be really sharp, and the focus seems to be functioning perfectly. The only problems are that the metre doesn’t work and that every once and awhile the shutter wont release. but I still have to wind to the next frame to load the shutter. Other than that I’m in love with the camera. The portrait of ken at the computer I like quite a bit and the one of Rachel at her computer too.

Might I also add that my scanner sucks!!! so I’ve decided to pick up the nikon V ed scanner as soon as possible I can get it from work for under 700 after taxes. not bad at all. and I think would be well worth the investment.

some shots from this weekend in london, I only scanned a couple strips cause I’m tired and ready for bed. Took some colour 120 shots of my grandparents this weekend on kodak portra 160nc pushed to 400.should have some unique results from those. booked the dark room for friday so I’m going to go print those then, and a couple of the b and w shots but it should be more of a colour print session than black and white. got to refine my colour skills.

Here’s a post of a woman on a train out of Paris. This is medium format and is a shitty scan of a small digital print from the lab in Vienna. this was on 120 portrait 100 nc.
