This is my first digital post in a very long time. I went camping this past labour day weekend with Katherine, Lindsay, Will, Emily, Clay, Alnis, and Brooke. We had a wonderful time. We went up to Koshlong lake which is near Haliburton. We stayed on a fabulous piece of crown land. I put my canoe on my car and we made the trek up north. These shots are all from a digital camera. They are presented from newest to oldest. This first shot is Emily the day before we left. The last shot is when we arrived in the woods in the dark trying to find our way to the camp sight. Will was quite knowledgeable of the area and had camped here many times before so he had marked the site with some rocks at the service road. Anyhow I have included a shot of Lindsay driving in front of my car because I think it’s funny to take digital shots that look somewhat in the style of commercial car ads. This attempt was far from it but it’s still a funny cliche.

I went up to montreal for the Rogers Cup. I had never been to a tennis tournament before and Evan was kind enough to host me. We have a portrait that sums up our weekend nicely.

Some of the other shots are from when clay and emily and I went and hung out with my parents and took their boat out for a spin. More shots of me than usual on that little trip.

I got new batteries for my camera but am still having trouble metering with my 50mm, not sure what the deal is, but I’ve just been metering externally.

I shot a bunch of 4×5. I got the film back tonight and have been scanning 6x12cm crops of the shots on my flatbed which will scan medium format but not 4×5. Most of the images don’t work with the crop although this one kind of does… Just image more tree on top and more ground below. I would prefer not to show these until I have a proper scan on the whole frame, but I’m eager.

Anyhow this is Ken under a tree with his dogs. I’ve got some 220 shots from this day coming back from the lab tomorrow.

There is a bit of a learning curve. Composing images upside down is something to get used to.

I was in detroit checking out this project I might do some lighting design for these guys so I thought I would go down and see what they’re project is all about and take some pictures. On my way there I saw a nice factory and then when I got there 20/20 was there following mitch and gina around. So I have some shots of the 20/20 film crew. Anyhow those guys were awesome and Corine (Mitch and Ginas friend and new neighbour) showed me some of the foreclosed houses in the neighbourhood. You can just walk into them, most have fire damage and have been stripped of any valuables. Copper pipes, wires, porcelain toilets, flooring, light fixtures. Anyhow it was an interesting weekend.

These shots are from 4×5. I didn’t want to rent the imacon scanner at imageworks so Patrick and I rigged up a set up with his medium format digital phase one back, a strobe with a softbox as a backlight and a macro lens. The results are actually pretty incredible. It took some tweaking of the raw images but we managed to get some pretty good colour/exposure latitude and the resolution/sharpness is better than you can get from any flatbed. I just left these in the sleeves because tonight was more of an experiment than anything else so there is some dust on the negs. But I’m going to build a negative carrier for our set up, one for 6×4.5 and 6×9 as well!

When we got to port perry there were lots of people out on the ice. This weekend I was out kitesnowboarding in keswick but forgot my camera oh well.

Goes back quite a while. Basically, a lot of me screwing around with my medium format 75mm lens hand holding it in front of the 5d with a sock between the body and the lens to create a tilt shift effect. Very sophisticated! There are shots at my parents place for my grandfathers 80th birthday. Family, cousins, etc. Then some more tilt shift from out the window of the office at work. Then there are a bunch of shots from the theatre, I was lighting a play for a week then some cast party shots. Oh there’s a washroom break photo in there somewhere too. The end! Very exciting. Anyhow I’ve put a couple rolls of triX through my new pen d3. I should have a chance to scan those this week. I also have a roll of 120 laying around from the summer that I should scan.
